Creating an iDTV Application from Inside a TV Company: A Situated and Participatory Approach

    Get PDF
Part 2: Organizational Semiotics and ApplicationsInternational audienceTV is a highly social and massive media that is worldwide available. The Interactive Digital TV represents a new device that is still constructing its identity. Designing applications for it is a challenging task, partially because of its intrinsic complex context and the lack of theoretical and methodological referential to support design activities. In this paper, we argue for a Socially Aware Computing approach to the design of iDTV applications, articulating artifacts and methods from Organizational Semiotics and Participatory Design. A case study on requirements for the design of an iDTV application is situated in the practical context of a Brazilian broadcasting TV Company. The results show benefits of using informed artifacts and methods in participatory and situated practices, indicating that it is possible and viable to make socially aware design in industrial settings

Understanding Idtv In A Developing Country And Designing A T-gov Application Prototype

TV is an artifact present in 90% of Brazilian homes and it is the main source of information for a major part of the population. The moment of definition and consolidation of an interactive digital TV technology in Brazil provides us with a unique opportunity to cope with the digital divide issues. Making sure that iDTV contents and devices are flexible enough so that people are able to perceive, understand and interact with them is an essential requirement for the democratization of information via TV broadcasting. This paper investigates the basis for setting an interactive digital TV in Brazil by analyzing the Brazilian scenario and by proposing recommendations for the design of accessible user interfaces for iDTV applications; this basis is illustrated with the design of ciT-goV, a t-gov application prototype. A T-gov Prototype Evaluation Considering A Wide Diversity Of Users

Research on interactive Digital TV (DTV) has mostly considered a reality already established in developed countries. The offer of interactivity on TV is just emerging in some developing countries and is a source of many challenges for interaction designers, as the DTV may reach people without access to other Information and Communication Technology. This paper discusses an experiment conducted to evaluate the user interface of a t-gov application prototype, taking into account the affective state and emotions of the users. The prototype was conceived according to the DTV Brazilian scenario, aiming to shed light on the main design questions an application designer of DTV user interface faces, especially when considering a wide diversity of users, most of them first-time DTV users. © 2008 IADIS.2734Card, S., Moran, T., Newell, A., (1983) The psychology of human-computer interaction, , Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum AssociatesChorianopoulos, K., Spinellis, D., User interface evaluation of interactive TV: A media studies perspective (2006) Universal Access in the Information Society, 5, pp. 209-218. , 2, pp, Springer, HeildelbergFurtado, E.S., Mayora, O., Anastassova, M., Kampf, T., Vasconcelos, P., An Investigation of iDTV User Needs in Brazilian and Italian Communities: Preliminary Cross-Cultural Findings (2007) Proceedings of Workshop on Perspectives, Challenges and Opportunities for Human-Computer Interaction in Latin America CLIHC 2007, , Cuernavaca, MexicoKutiishi, S.M., Piccolo, L.S.G., Interactive TV Services and Applications for Digital Inclusion in Brazil (2006) Proceedings of EuroITV 2006, pp. 452-453Liu, K., (2000) Semiotics in Information Systems Engineering, , Cambridge University Press(2007) Ministry of Health, 2007. Perspectives On The Evaluation Of Affective Quality In Social Software

    No full text
Enormous changes in the computing field are being experienced, altering the way we relate ourselves with computational technology. If computers had at first limited function and presence in our lives, they are now being used everywhere, all the time, for a multitude of purposes and interaction means for interactivity, supporting even our social relations. This shift calls for new ways of evaluating systems, demanding attention not only to usability and accessibility issues but also to the emotional and affective ones. This paper presents a brief review on theory and methods for affective evaluation of computer systems, as a preliminary discussion on the suitability of existing methods for social software applications. The discussion is instantiated in inclusive social software - Vila na Rede, a system developed under a participatory design approach with the purpose of fostering a digital culture among the less favoured segment in the Brazilian society. Designing To Promote A New Social Affordance For Energy Consumption

    No full text
The relation between energy consumption and its environmental impact is weak or even almost inexistent in the Brazilian scenario due to sociocultural reasons. This work takes advantage of an experimental smart grid deployment scenario to propose the concept of Social Eco-feedback Technology. It aims at establishing this relation by promoting a new social affordance (behavior pattern), favoring a new way of perceiving energy. The concept of affordance and artifacts of the Organizational Semiotics are extended to encompass both the analysis of actual and intended behavior through a new technology design. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2013.399213225Software and Integrated IT Solutions Group,FP7 Programme: CIP-ICT-PSP-2009-2013,ISACA Athens Chapter,University of Piraeus Research CenterUnderstanding Consumer Preferences in Energy Efficiency, , http://www.accenture.com/us-en/Pages/insight-understanding-consumer-preferences-energyefficiency-utilities-summary.aspx, AccentureConsumo de Energia Eléctrica (kWh Per Capita), , http://datos.bancomundial.org/indicador/EG.USE.ELEC.KH.PC, Banco MundialTen Year Plan for Energy Expansion (PDE 2017), , http://www.epe.gov.br/PDEE/Forms/EPEEstudo.aspx, BrazilDarby, S., Smart metering: What potential for householder engagement? Interaction Design Of Social Software: Clarifying Requirements Through A Culturally Aware Artifact

    No full text
Taking part in a social software is a growing reality worldwide, while the interaction design of social software is still a challenging task due to the lack of third ReI paradigm artifacts, methods, tools and even theories for supporting designers. In this paper we present an artifact for the requirements clarification activity, and suggest some activities in order to guide designers to take cultural issues into account. We situate our discussions in a practical context related to the development of social software for professionals of the Special Education field. © 2011 IEEE.293298Boyd, D., The significance of social software (2007) BlogTalks Reloaded: Social Software Research & Cases, Norderstedt, pp. 15-30Sellen, A., Rogers, Y., Harper, R., Rodden, T., Reflecting human values in the digital age (2009) Communications of the ACM, 52, pp. 58-66Pereira, R., Baranauskas, M.C.C., Valuation framing for social software a culturally aware artifact (2011) 13th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS), , in pressBaranauskas, M.C.C., Socially aware computing (2009) VI International Conference on Engineering and Computer Education, pp. 1-4Schuler, D., Namioka, A., (1993) Participatory Design: Principles and Practices, , Hillsdale, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, IncHendler, J., Shadbolt, N., Hall, W., Berners-Lee, T., Weitzner, D., Web science: An interdisciplinary approach to understanding the web (2008) Communications of the ACM, 51, pp. 60-69. , JulyHarrison, S., Tatar, D., Sengers, P., The three paradigms of HCI (2007) ACM Computer-Human Interaction Conference(CHI'07), pp. 1-21Liu, K., (2000) Semiotics in Information Systems Engineering, , Cambridge, University PressHall, E.T., The silent language (1959) Anchoor BooksKolkman, M., (1993) Problem Articulation Methodology, , PhD thesis, University of Twente, EnschedeSchwartz, S.H., (2005) Basic Human Values: Their Content and Structure Across Countries, , Values and Behaviors in Organizations.
